Learning Goals for February 28th to March 4th!

Our 100th day of school is Monday! Hooray! Please make sure that your child brings their 100 items. We will be using them in math!


Math:
How many ways can we make $1.00?
How many ways can we show 100?
Fractions of a whole: 1/2, 1/3, 1/4, 1/6, 1/8 etc. 1/2 means 1 out of 2 equal parts.
Fractions of a set (i.e. 1/5 of my M&M's are blue or 1 out 5 in all are blue.)
Telling time to the hour and half hour
What are equal groups? Dividing items into equal groups. 
Adding 3 two-digit numbers together


Phonograms: g, y, i, ee, ea, wh, dge, ow, oo, ou


Spelling: Please see your child's homework for their spelling list.


Language Arts:
Short and long "e" sounds
Writing like "Amelia" - we didn't get a chance to work on this last week:(

"Thanksgiving Day" Poem


Science:
What are minerals? How can we tell minerals apart?
Review the three types of rock.
Review the layers of the earth.


History:
English Settlers: Review Captain John Smith and Jamestown.
The role of Pocahontas and Powhatan.
Slavery, plantations in the southern colonies.
English Settlers in Massachussetts: the Pilgrims, the Mayflower and Thanksgiving Day.


Social Studies:
We are going to continue to learn about manners. This week we are going to be learning about phone manners, movie theater manners, store manners and different ways to politely greet someone.

English Settlers... The story of the Lost Colony and Sir Walter Raleigh and Virginia Dare.
Jamestown, Virginia and John Smith. 


Science:
Rocks and Minerals
Formation and characteristics of different kinds of rocks; metamorphic, igneous and sedimentary
Important minerals in the earth (quartz, gold, sulphur, coal, diamond, iron and ore.)


Social Studies:
What are manners?
The importance of saying "please and thank you."
Manners at school.
Manner while I eat - Review the poem Table Manners

Learning Goals for February 14th to the 17th!

A few reminders....
Early release on Thursday at 1 pm
No School Friday, February 18th or Monday, February 21st
Valentine's Day Party February 14th
Stuffed animal day this Thursday, have your child bring their favorite stuffed animal (it must be able to fit on their lap at school.)

Math
Measurement both nonstandard and standard units of measurement
Review of double digit addition and subtraction with regrouping
Hundreds place, writing 3-digit numbers, expanded notation and drawing the quantity.

Here are the hints for this weeks phonograms.
gu- 2-letter /g/
ph- 2-letter /f/
oa- is usually in the beginning or middle of a word.
ci- short, 2-letter /sh/

Math:
Measurement! We will be using nonstandard units of measurement to measure the length and height of various objects. 
Using a ruler to measure to the nearest inch.
Review of double digit addition and subtraction.
Hundreds place, expanded notation of a three digit number.
Counting mixed coins
Spelling:
